    • Yes, it is sad about the automation but I guess it is more cost efficient. The thing I miss now is the sound of fog horns. I grew up hearing the fog horn at Point Atkinson and we could also hear the one at Merry Island. With improvements in navigation they are no longer needed. We were talking to some former lighthouse keepers the other day and I must say they didn’t share my love of fog horns. Must be a little different when they are in your house. People who live on small islands are a different sort of people and after having lived on a smallish island for a number of years I’d say our love for islands has diminished but now we do say that we are lighthouse keepers without the lighthouse. We still like our isolation and the company of each other.

      • It may be more cost efficient but it isn’t as romantic!

We get the ship’s horns here when it’s foggy. I like to hear them in the distance when I’m in bed at night, but apparently people who live on the waterfront have been complaining about the noise. I guess they want safety to come second to their personal convenience! I might suggest to them that they move away from the waterfront if they don’t like what goes along with shipping activity 🙂
